Cartooning for Writers with Andy Hartzell

Saturday, November 8, 2025
1–2:00pm, Activity Hub located in the Head House

The medium of comics continues to expand into every literary niche, from autobio to whodunnit. Have you wondered whether the graphic novel might be the right vehicle for your writing? In this casual drop-in workshop, award-winning cartoonist Andy Hartzell will offer hands-on exercises for turning prose into pictures. You’ll learn about the basics of page layout, interplay of word and image, collaborating with an artist, and more. No drawing expertise is required, but participants are encouraged to bring a short sample of their writing to work from. (Ages 14+)

About the Author

Andy Hartzell‘s first graphic novel, Fox Bunny Funny, was a New York Times holiday pick. He has contributed to many anthologies, including No Straight Lines (Eisner nomination) and Qu33r (Ignatz Award), and he received an Xeric award for his first comic, Bread & Circuses. He makes his personal paradise in Oakland, CA, where his partner Ron tends the garden, and his boxador Louis tears it up again. He works as an interaction designer and creative strategist when he’s not making comics.
